Town of Montgomery
Community Garden

I am sure, by now, most of you have heard that one of our most noted and respected gardeners has died. Rod MacDonald, who did as much as anyone to create the community garden and who worked side by side with me last spring to get the project off the ground, died April 2nd, shortly after spending the afternoon working in his beloved garden plot. I personally miss Rod very much. I got to know him very well through our association together on the Town's Conservation Advisory Council. He supported the idea of the creation of the garden from the moment it was first broached. He drove the first stake and ran the first line. He hand picked the best posts and dug trenches and cleaned birdhouses. He helped put up the fence and was at the table for the first sign-ups. Rod loved the garden. He loved the hill we are on and the birds and the wind. He moved so easily among people. He was positive and formidable in his faith in people. Today I tilled the 12 new garden plots. I thought of our times together. He was going to help me stake out the new plots but couldn't make it. In Rod we can find our respect for each other and for nature and for the passing of time. Richard
